Renew Richmond, is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to help empower individuals from all walks of life to cultivate healthier lifestyles through the growth and production of food.
Word of Renew Richmond's successful Reid Elementary collaborative prompted partnerships with other neighboring organizations in Southside Richmond. In 2011 , The Jerusalem Connection, a neighboring Jewish community and resource center, requested assistance in creating and establishing an urban farm on 2 acres of their land.
With the agricultural vision of Renew Richmond and the landscape architectural expertise of Richmond-based civil engineering firm Timmons Group, a detailed design for the Jerusalem Connection Farm Project was underway. Renew Richmond employed the urban agricultural model used by Milwaukee's Growing Power, a nonprofit organization providing equal access to healthy affordable food, to develop a small urban organic farm plan that was implemented in Summer 2012.
The garden contains greenhouses and row crops for sustainable large-scale production of produce, soil, and seedlings. Sale of value-added products (compost, seed starts, seeds, vermicompost worm castings) and charitable donation of the produce to local community organizations (churches, community centers, schools, clubs, etc.) will enable Renew Richmond
to successfully provide more than 4,000lbs of food a year to the community surrounding Jerusalem Connection while financially sustaining itself as a functioning nonprofit. It is Renew Richmond's plan that projects like The Jerusalem Connection Farm will become models for progressive urban sustainability efforts in the City of Richmond. jc is thursdays door opens 9 am and 5 pm game starts 11 am and 7 pm. sundays door opens at 11 am game starts at 1 pm saturday midnight doors open at 1030 pm game starts at 1201 am
Founded in 2009, Renew Richmond is recognized as a growing not-for-profit organization providing research based programs where individuals learn basic life skills for propagation, preparation and consumption of healthful whole food, re-establish a connection between themselves and the environment in which they live, and gain beneficial working knowledge which gives them additional economic potential from increased employment or entrepreneurship.
Renew Richmond envisions a community in which all members living in areas where healthy, affordable food is difficult to obtain have access to fresh produce and nutrition education they require to sustain healthy and productive lifestyles. While Renew Richmond’s programs serve individuals of all socioeconomic backgrounds, the nonprofit’s primary focus is low-income populations with increased statistical risk for nutrition related health issues such as diabetes, heart disease and chronic obesity. With rising rates of heart disease, obesity and diabetes directly linked to industrially produced food products including packages and fast foods, Renew believes that the best way to combat these preventable conditions it to engage children and their families in fun, educational projects to develop enthusiasm about healthy, great tasting natural foods.
It is the plan of Renew Richmond to provide fresh, healthy, locally grown fruits and vegetables to those individuals who have little to no access. Renew is confident that a holistic program focusing on the hands-on growth and consumption of nutrient dense food can repair the health and well-being of individuals.
